Pfizer has made a serious mistake by selling the little blue pill in a bid to be marketed as a Viagra, the US Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday.
The FDA has decided to reject an application to market Viagra as a generic drug. The drugmaker has been under a long-running battle with rival drug makers, with Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) and Schering-Plough Co. (Schering-Plough) claiming to have the best sales for Viagra in the US. But the pharmaceutical company’s drug, called Vitaros (trade name Erector), is approved for sale by the FDA for use only, the company said.
The FDA is also considering a similar application to market the little blue pill in China.
Schering-Plough, which makes the pill, said it is evaluating the drug’s potential sales in the coming weeks, but did not return calls seeking comment.
“We are having trouble complying with the order,” said Schering-Plough spokesman Michael Beerman. “We are having trouble complying with the order.”
Schering-Plough also announced plans to launch a generic version of the little blue pill in the US in late 2017.
Pfizer said it had decided to launch the drug in the US only, but the company was not able to confirm the availability of the generic version until March 2023. It is not expected that the generic version will be available until March 2023.
